I don't know and don't care, quite frankly. After all, God made the trees and He is the creator of giving gifts. In fact, the greatest Christmas tree ever is at the center of His plan.

The greatest Christmas tree had no branches and no lights yet it was adorned with the most beautiful and horrifying image the world has ever witnessed. This tree became the symbol of death and life. This tree is on your necklace and your neighbors bumper sticker. Of course, I am speaking of the cross. I know Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, but Jesus said that His purpose in coming to Earth was the work He would complete at the cross. His birth was the first step on His road to the cross. At the cross, Jesus would pay the penalty for our sins and redeemed us back to God. At the cross, death would face its conqueror. At the cross, I would be made whole.

Look at the cross. See the broken body of our Lord. See the blood soaked wood and the pools of red stained Earth at its base. What good could come from such a tree? What good, indeed. Like all Christmas trees, this one has presents under it. For at the foot of the cross I have found the gifts of salvation, deliverance, freedom, healing and purpose. At the foot of this tree I have found life.

I go back to the cross daily to look upon it in wonder and amazement, and after all these years I still find something special with my name on it; something God has wrapped up just for me. It may be peace for troubled times or hope in a difficult situation or courage to face the day. My Father always thinks of me and gets me exactly what I need.

So as the decorations and the trees come down for the year, remember that the greatest Christmas tree will remain - a beacon of hope. Go to it and dig around. There is something there with your name on it.

Loudership - Leadership doesn't have to be loud

I have been a minister for 25 years now. I have been to numerous events where preachers and church leaders gather, and over the years I have noticed a comical trend. We think leaders must be loud. If I can speak the loudest, tell the funniest joke or be the most charismatic I must be a great leader. I've even seen the "who can pray the loudest contest". I guess we're programmed to think of leadership in these terms, but leadership doesn't have to be loud.

Some of the greatest leaders I have known have been quiet in nature. They were more likely to show you the right path than yell directions at you. Leadership is not about personality or charisma but direction. To lead someone is to be going somewhere in the first place. I would rather follow a quiet leader who knew where she was going than a loud one who was going in circles.

How about you, leader? Are you going somewhere? Has God given you direction? Is someone following you? How about you, follower? Are you spellbound by someone's charisma or volume? Are you following someone who is going somewhere?

If there's no direction, then we're just making noise.
(For direction, seek God)

Psalm 23

Do you know Psalms 23? Can you quote it to me? The 23rd Psalm is one of the most familiar Biblical passages. It's been written on bookmarks and on pictures. It's been quoted in Sunday School and in films. Psalm 23 is world-renown and for good reason - it's a comforting look at life lived daily with the Good Shepherd.

Many people know the 23rd Psalm but the greater question is - Do you know the Shepherd?
Jesus wants to walk with you daily. He longs to lead you into green pastures, to protect you from harm and feed you abundantly. Memorizing the chapter is great but if you aren't walking daily with Jesus you're missing out on what the chapter is trying to teach you.

Real power for Christian living doesn't come from catch phrases or memorized text. To know the word of God is good, but not good enough. To memorize and quote the word of God is good, but not good enough. Real power for your everyday life comes from living out the word of God.

So follow the Shepherd. Seek Him out. Take time daily to recognize and acknowledge His presence in your life. Goodness and Mercy are following you, slow down and let them catch you. Taking time out of your day to connect with Jesus will help you to live a life of purpose and power.

Faith

Faith - It is the basis for all that we are and do as Christians. Without it, it's impossible to have a relationship with God. For we must believe that God exists and that He wants to have a relationship with us; a good relationship that is beneficial for both parties. Do you believe in God? Do you truly believe in God? If you do, do you believe that He is a good God? Do you believe that God wants to help you and bless you? God's power and provision are limitless. He has everything that you and I need, but we will never see it with our physical eyes until we can see it with our spiritual eyes. Faith is seeing in the spirit.
There have been many miracles take place in and around us, of late. God is moving where there is faith. So, whatever the need in your life have faith. Get a spiritual vision of your miracle. Pray with the answer in mind and watch as God honors His promises to you.

Superman of God?

Do you live everyday as a normal person or are you superhuman? If you are a child of God you have daily access to the power of God. When Jesus left the earth He said He would not leave us alone, but that the Holy Spirit would come and live in us. He would guide us, teach us and empower us. If you were filled with the Spirit 20 years ago you have a good memory, but are you daily filled? We can go to work as an ordinary human or as an empowered human. We can enjoy our time off as an ordinary human or as an empowered human.

If you want to live the empowered life, do this;
1. Pray before you Do. Prayers weren't meant to replace your actions they were meant to empower them.
2. Stay full of the Word. The Bible is alive. It's precepts in your heart have a way of coming out in your speech and actions.
3. Meditate. Take time to sit still and listen to God's voice, allowing the Holy Spirit give you direction and encouragement.

These are not all of the disciplines of an empowered life, but they are the things that help me feel His power working in me daily. They are simple but they do take time. So, give some time to the Lord before you engage the world. You'll find that even the little things you do will be done with insight and power.

It's raining it's pouring

How in the world can the old man be snoring? How can anyone feel at ease when life is pouring down on you? Wait a minute, I seem to remember a story from the Bible where the disciples were out at sea and the storms came and they all began to panic in fear of their lives. meanwhile Jesus was asleep in the bottom of the boat. They thought his lack of panic meant a lack of concern. Not so! Jesus could sleep through the storm because He is greater than the storm. But what about you?
Can you stay at rest even when life is raining down on you. It all depends on whether the Master is in your boat. Is He? Or did you launch out on your own?

Take Him with you!

Take the time

Hey out there,
Today let me encourage you (and myself) to take the time to enjoy life. God has given us so many wonderful blessing to enjoy; sunshine, family, friends. I know life is also filled with responsibilities and burdens but we can't let those consume us. How would you feel if you gave your child something he could have fun with but he never played with it. It just sat in the closet, wasted. That must be how God feels when we overlook the little joys that He has given to us that we often take for granted. So, do this - Kiss your husband or wife real hard, tickle your kids or grandkids, take a walk or sit on the porch and thank God for the little things that put everything else in persepctive.
After all, the little things aren't really that little.

Love ya, Mylon

That's Hot!

No, not Paris Hilton. I hope you are doing well. I know it's been a long time since my last post, and I have really great excuses; or maybe not. I haven't posted recently because I haven't had time to give you something deep or powerful. So I've just put it off. I believe most of us think this way; "If I can't give a lot of money I won't give any." "If I can't volunteer for a whole day, there's no sense in giving an hour. " See what I mean! The truth is, if we give what we can, God will take what we give, no matter how little, and do something great with it.
So here's my little bit today. To some it is their weight or their looks; to others it is a failed marriage or a lost job. We all have sore places in our lives and when someone touches that spot we feel the pain.

What is your sore spot? Let me help you out. There are many things about you that you can laugh at. Others can make fun of you and you laugh right along with them. But then, there is that subject- that thing that isn't funny. That is your sore spot.

Not only do you have a sore spot, others do also. Your husband, wife, friend or co-worker; they all have a sore spot. Do you know what it is? Do you take great care to leave that spot alone so it can heal, or do you bring it up time and time again?

We all have places in our lives that haven't had the chance to heal. So be careful what you say and how you act toward others. You don't want to pour salt in a fresh wound.

Setting goals for 2009

Hey there, I know that this is the usual time for making resolutions. Here's how it works; we make a resolution, fight to keep it for a while then we give up and live the way we've always lived.

Consider this; maybe you don't need a change in your actions but a change in your nature. This year don't set goals that are only based on actions or accomplishments, set goals that are designed to change who you are on the inside.

For instance, if you have traditionally been bad with money and haven't saved a penny, don't make a resolution that you are going to save x amount of dollars. Make a goal to become the kind of person who saves money. If you try to save money as the person you always were it will be a struggle from the word go. But if you save money as a new person; a person changed by the power of the Holy Spirit, saving money will come naturally to you.

It's the fruit vs. root thing. Changing your behavior is 'working on the fruit', but changing your nature is 'working on the root', and working on the root is the only way to have a permanent change.

You'll need God's help. You can't change your nature on your own, but if you take steps, pray that God would help you and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in your life, you can become a new person. After all, isn't that what we really want.

So set your goals and watch as you and God make 2009 the year that you experienced some great changes in YOU!

Grace is more than enough

Well it took my a while but my first book is here. I am happy to say that "Grace is more than enough" is selling well and we are getting great feedback. We are living in a time when God is changing the focus of the church from ourselves to Him. We must learn to accept our imperfections as we serve our perfect God. "Grace is more than enough" will help you learn to deal with sin, guilt, feelings of inferiority and pain so that you can move beyond YOU and get your focus on the one who deserves it.

Don't Jump part four

"Discipling", what is it?

"Discipling" is not really a word but I like to use it anyway. You could say "Making Discplies" but that infers that they are finished and not in the process. So for all you English scholars out there, please forgive me.

To disciple another is a difficult spiritual task. We usually think of discipline as a term describing our own ability to control ourselves but Christian discipline is taught. Jesus taught His disciples. They became disciplined in the Christian faith and life. Discipling someone is the long spiritual process by which we help converts become conquerors. It is the process that turns a belief system into a way of life; the Christian life.

Discipling others can be tough and we must always keep a spiritual perspective when doing so. When we fail to make disciples we end up with a church full of spiritual babies whose only concern is for themselves; what can God do for me?

When helping others become disciples of Christ, we must remember that we are working with humans; imperfect people who are trying to live a life that only Jesus has been able to live. Even our own sin and failures should remind us to be aware of the humanity in those who are not as far down the road as we are. So be prepared. Don't jump out of your boots when you find out that your protegee is making bad decisions. The next time they come to you in confidence keep your jaw closed, stay away from the impulse to say, "How could you" or "I can't believe you did that". What's so hard to believe; that people do dumb things. Aren't you human too? Can you remember a time when your sin came to light and someone gave you a look of shame or a speech that just made you feel guilty. Be careful or God just might open up your closet and turn the light on some of the bonehead things that you have done.

The point is this; life is messy. People are messy. Christians are messy and they need encouragement and understanding. They need to know that their failures aren't the end of the world and that God can help them overcome. So be prepared for anything. I've heard a lot of confessions in my ministry and from time to time I am still surprised or caught off guard. But I make sure to keep my mouth closed and my toes clinched so I don't jump out of my boots in shock. It lets them know that God and I won't abandon them, even when they blow it.

Don't Jump part 3

We have been learning the do's and don't s of discipling other believers. In this post I want to help you learn the "don't jump ship" principle.

When helping others it's easy to get discouraged and quit. We look at others through human eyes and fail to see what God is doing in that person. We look for natural manifestations like running to the altar or crying or carrying their Bible. It's great when we see an outward sign of what God is doing on the inside. But just because you don't see it, doesn't mean that God is not at work; it doesn't mean that your words aren't getting through.

Which is why we must rely on prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Yes, there may be times when God instructs you to leave someone alone, it has happened to me. I have been told by God to let someone go and it is not an easy feeling, but then again it's not my call, it's His. We must rely on His leading and unless He is leading you away, then stay on track, don't give up, don't quit.

If there were ever someone who deserved to be abandoned it was Peter. He messed up for sure, and yet when people didn't give him much hope, Jesus wouldn't quit. Peter is an example of what is around you; And what is around you? People are around you, people who are not yet what they will become.

If you don't jump ship; if you don't give up, you give hope for those struggling to become like Jesus.

Don't jump - part two

Hey,
Thanks to everyone who has been in prayer for my health and recovery. The past three weeks have been a battle for me but i feel I am on the mend finally.

In my last post I started a series on discipling others called "Don't Jump". Part one focused on the importance of not jumping over the edge with those you are helping. Check the last post for more.
Part two is Don't jump to conclusions. Jesus was sitting at the well talking to a Samaritan woman. She was sizing him up with various questions but Jesus already knew her entire life story. He knew what she had done, where she was now and what she would do in the future. It's funny how we often think we are Jesus. We meet people and size them up based on their dress or speech or demeanor. We think we know who is worthy of our time and who is a waste of time.
You and I are not like Jesus in this story we are more like the Samaritan woman. We make small talk and try to figure out what the other person is about; who they really are. We assume one thing and then we find out something totally different. Only God knows the heart of individuals and only He can see the true need and the true potential inside.

So where does that leave us? We must learn to base our discipling on the guidance of the Holy Spirit and not on our knowledge of body language or their criminal record. Make discipling a matter of prayer. That means pray for that person and pray for God to lead you in how you help that person. Put God back in the driver's seat and obey what He tells you. Follow His leading. You will find that the closer you are to God the easier it is to help others. Your spirit is softer and more compassionate. Your patience is greater and your actions accomplish more because they are not your ideas, they are God's.

When helping others develop in Christ it is easy to Judge a book by it's cover, or it's past, or it's current condition but we are not able to see the whole picture. You never know what God will do through a human, only God knows. There are many people that I have pronounced as useless who have become powerful men and women of God; people I would have given up on. Likewise there have been many people who seemed to be perfect for the faith and yet they aren't serving God today.

No one is worthless and no effort of love is wasted. Just follow God's lead and watch as He brings out the best in others.

Don't jump - Part one

Hey there,
Over the next few weeks I'm going to be talking about discipling others. As Christians, it is our job to help others; It is our job to disciple others in the faith. We take someone who is younger in the Lord and we encourage and help them. We want to see them grow and become strong, anointed Kingdom workers for Christ. But many times our proteges let us down. They miss church and do things they shouldn't, and many give up and abandon their faith altogether. It can be very discouraging. In fact, if you're going to truly invest yourself in helping others grow in their faith, you better toughen up. Discipling others isn't easy but it is well worth it. Think about your own life and the people who discipled you. Where would you be if they had given up on you when you fell short?

There are going be some great joys and some huge disappointments and no one approach works best, but here are some things that will guide you in your endeavor to build true disciples of Christ.

First, Don't jump off a cliff with them. You've all heard the question, "If your friends jumped off a cliff would you?" There is a good lesson in that question. Many times we become so attached to the people we are trying to help that we follow them over the edge. Our desire to see them do well causes us to go to great lengths to help them and sometimes we go to far.

There was a guy (let's call him Dave) I was trying to help. Dave had a lot of problems and situations to deal with. He had received Christ in his life and I was trying to help him. I had great hopes for Dave and I invested a lot of my time and heart in him. But there was a problem; Dave needed me too much. He kept calling and talking for hours, he needed more help than I could give him, and he was starting to invade my personal and family space. We all need personal time and space. We all need family time and space. When we let others come in and take over we are doing them, ourselves and our families no good.

As I created lines in our relationship that I insisted Dave not cross, Dave became disenchanted with me and upset that I wouldn't go to whatever lengths he thought necessary for him. He wanted me to jump over the cliff with him. Of course this upset me. After all, I had invested much in this man; I had gone beyond the call of duty. I was not pleased with the outcome but there was another scenario that would've been even worse;

If I would've sacrificed my time with God for time with Dave; if I would've sacrificed my personal health, finances, and family for Dave, then I would have become Dave. Dave would have taken my money until I was in need of a loan. Dave would have taken my time until my children needed a father. Dave would have taken my time until I had no time to spend with my wife and with God. Helping others is a wonderful thing but we cannot help others when we allow ourselves to be taken under.

Get this picture. You're out in the ocean with Dave. Both of you are swimming to stay afloat. Dave is starting to sink. What do you do? You help Dave if you can. But what if you grab onto Dave and in a panic he pushes you and himself under the water. You cannot help Dave if you are drowning yourself. That is why you must always keep a healthy foundation in your spirit, health, family and ministry. If you allow others to drag you under then no one is better; no one is helped.

Don't give your money away until your own family needs are not met. Don't give your time away until there is no time for rest or prayer. Don't allow yourself to be pulled into the water, if you do, you will be looking for help. Keep a firm foundation in your life. If you do you will always have your feet in a solid place; a place that is ideal for reaching out and helping others.

Keep up the fight for those people like Dave, they need us, but fight on your own terms. Create boundaries and limitations, after all, you are not God. You can't always be there; you don't have unlimited time and resources.

Next time; Don't jump to conclusions

Making new Music

Hey out there in cyberland. You may be wondering what I have been up to lately. Music, in a word. I have been writing new songs since the beginning of the year and have begun the recording process. If you have been around me you know just how intense and time consuming recording is for me, so if I seem to disappear for long periods of time it is not that I'm sleeping, just immersed in the music. I'll try to keep you informed along the way. I have been a little under the weather here of late but my spirit has been refreshed. Our District Convention was a great time of refreshing for me. As leaders in the church we often forget one very important lesson; the cook needs to eat. Some of us spend every waking moment feeding other people. Every church event or service is about giving to others. We prepare the food for the week and take great care to serve it to others and we enjoy watching as they are blessed by what God has done through us but even the cook needs to eat. Convention always feeds me. I wish we had them every month. I just need to find more places and ways to be fed. Do you? Do you find yourself aggravated, tired, out of energy or creativity? Maybe you're like me and need to be fed by someone. After all, we are just human and we need to be ministered to as much as others. What do you do when your physically hungry, you go get food. So lets get out and get some food for our souls. I know we will be refreshed and more productive if we do.

Love you, Pastor Avery

Urgent is not necessarily important

Okay this blog is inspired by Stephen Covey's book "First things first" so although not my idea, the principle has been a great guidance for my life. I have had one of those weeks where my long list of things to do has gotten longer daily. The peak came yesterday when the foul smell of a dead animal permeated through the church building. With Sunday coming and no one else around I began the search. Gloves on my hands and a dust mask on my face I opened up the ceiling and tore into walls, all the while thinking, "I shouldn't have to do this, I don't have time for this" Time is always an issue for most people. We seem to run out of it and when we look back and we can't figure out where the week went. But if you take a real-time inventory of your daily life you will find it filled with things that are urgent but not important.

Most people use this approach to life; do all the little menial tasks and get them out of the way, then you can concentrate on the big important stuff. Bad idea, because the little menial tasks never end and we end up spending our lives in the conquest of the unimportant. Try this approach; do the important things first. Pray first not last. Study for your Sunday School class early in the week not on Saturday night. Play catch with your son, you can work on the yard later. Life is full of little tasks that seem to scream to us, "hey, I need you to take care of me now" but most of those little tasks don't better our lives at all and we wouldn't suffer one bit if they were ignored. So do the important things first and when your done, then you can tackle that little to do list.

Mary and Martha were hosting Jesus at their home. Martha was busy with the little tasks that seemed to be urgent, while Mary just sat at Jesus' feet taking in all that He said. Martha was upset with Mary but Jesus corrected her, "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." It was good for Martha to work for the Lord but it would have been better to have spent some time first at His feet. Mary wasn't lazy, she had her priorities in order putting what was important first. (Luke 10:38-42)

So figure out what is truly important and do it first, you'll have a better more productive life.
Yes, I did find the dead raccoon and he was delicious. I do my best to keep my politics out of the pulpit but there are times when it is necessary to speak up when political movements are contrary to God's word. No matter what political party you are with, we must remember to keep God's word; period. With this in mind, I want to address a movement that concerns me. It is the notion that the government is going to and should take care of your basic necessities. I am finding more and more people who feel that they have a right to the basics whether they work or not. Let me put politics aside and go to the word of God.

Proverbs 6:6-11
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.

This scripture obviously shows a cause and effect. That if you work hard and make good decisions you will be rewarded, if you don't you will suffer poverty.

2 Thess. 3:10
For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."

Once again the bible teaches hard work as the avenue for provision and no work as the avenue to hunger.

Philippians 4:19
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

This is where we really must understand God's plan for our provision. Government is not our source, God is. God demands that we trust Him for our food, rent, shelter etc. When we learn to depend on other sources we have made those sources idols. They have taken a place in our life that belongs to God alone. We must also understand that God intends for all of us to be hard workers. God is our provider, it isn't that we must trust in the work of our own hands but that working hard puts us in a position to receive God's provision. Picture a single mother cooking dinner after a long day at work. She is in a position to receive God's provision. Picture a husband getting up and going to a job that is hard. He has put himself in a position to receive God's provision. Now picture a man asleep on the couch when he should be working or looking for work. He has put himself in a position to receive poverty.

No doubt there are times when we need help and there are those who are in a permanent position of disadvantage and need help. The church should be the first to do it's part, but most of us are able to work.

So get up children of God. Uncle Sam is not your provider, Father God is. Do what He says and trust Him for your needs. Quit depending on government to take care of you and learn to depend on God. Put yourself in a position to receive what he has for you and watch as God provides for each your needs.

Going on a life diet.

During difficult times it is hard for us to determine what things we should hold on to. If there isn't enough money, what do we let go of and what do we hold on to? If there isn't enough time, what do we neglect and what things do we give our time to? We often acquire too much stuff in our lives. We have too many things going on and the important things in our lives become overshadowed by all the excess that we have accumulated. We have too many bills and too many responsibilities. We have made too many plans and do too many things and we lose sight of what's is important. We can find ourselves embracing the things of this world instead of the the Kingdom of God.

Get this: "You can't embrace the Kingdom when you're holding on to the world"

Maybe it's time for you to let go of some of the junk that has accumulated in your life. Maybe it's time for you to go on a life diet. Get rid of some of the excess on your life so that you can be the sleek, powerful soldier for Christ that He created you to be. You cannot embrace your wife when your hands are full of work. You cannot embrace your child when your hands are already full of appointments. You cannot embrace the hand of the King when your hands are busy doing the work of the world. So lose some things if you need to and hold on to the only thing that will not be moved; God Almighty

Stop and take some time

Hey you! I know you're busy but I need to remind you of all the wonderful things in your life. Are you healthy? Are you employed? Do you have a roof over your head? Do you have friends and family who love you? There are so many wonderful things in our lives, but it's easy to get so busy that they get lost in the hustle. But even if you answered no to all of these questions there is still one wonderful blessing in your life. It is the love of God. No matter where you are or what is going on in your life, God loves you. No matter how badly you have messed up, God loves you. A lot of things in life will let you down but God's love is eternally reliable. I need an 8 day week. That would be so cool, having one extra day in the week to get things done. Being a Pastor, my schedule evolves around Sunday. Everything builds up to Sunday. I know church isn't everything but it is extremely important. That's why Paul told us to encourage one another as we see the day (the day we gather together) approaching. It would do us all some good to start preparing for Sunday as early as Monday.
